The first University in the Volta Region christened Volta University College (VUC) will officially take off in the regional capital, Ho on September 26, 2006.
The Volta University College will hold its first matriculation on the same day and some members of the University Governing Council would be honoured with Honorary Doctorate degrees. It is likely that, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli state and the President of the Asogli Traditional Council Togbega Afede XIV would be the chancellor of the University Director of Education is the registrar.
It is a private initiative and would be handed over to the government after 5 years service to the region.
Togbega Adadzawa III paramount chief of Shia Traditional areas is the chairman of the 17 member governing council while Mr. Patrice Sylvester Selormey is the Secretary to the council.
The Security governing council is chaired by Joseph Alifo while Eunice Agyeman is the Secretary.
The Senate is yet to be composed and the position of vice chancellor has been advertised.
Like the University of Ghana which started in a classroom at the Achimota School, VUC is also currently using the Prince of Peace Preparatory school campus as its temporary lecture hall and theatre but will soon move to its permanent site located at Jsaba – Fiave.
The VUC idea was conceived in 2003 by a Nigerian Professor Earnest Duru Chiri as an initiative of Regional Education Programme for disabled veterans and Refugees for Africa an NGO.
The University’s institutional and Programme Accreditation fee of 12.9 million has been fully paid to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) on February 15, 2006 and has since received approval for commencement of its academic programmes.
The University College when it finally takes off in September this year, will have eight faculties including Faculty of HIV/AIDS (College of Virology and Bro-medical Research Centre), Faculty of Education, Faculty of Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration, Faculty of Theology and Missions.
The rest are Faculties of Linguistic Studies, Epidemiological and Demographic Studies and Policy Conflict Resolution and Refuges Studies.
VUC will run two major programmes, in degree and Diploma certificates.
Unlike the E.P. Church University which is still on the drawing board for want of funding VUC has a well accumulated fund to support its programmes including research works.
The University College also accepts International Students, but directed that they undergo Cultural orientation programme with the Ghana Immigration Service.
Addressing the first governing council meeting here in Ho its chairman Togbe Adadzawa blamed the long delay of establishing a University in the region on its citizenry who were more parochial adding that it is nobody’s doing but rather lack of risk taking and investment drive even though they have the resources to do so.
He therefore challenged all Voltarians to put their heads together to support the founder of the University College for the benefit of the region. The Chairman pleaded with the Council members to support and embrace the VUC wholeheartedly and not to sit on the fence. He urge members to eschew, rancour, acrimony, blackmailing and pull him down attitude to be able to move forward in confidence.
The President and founder of the University College Prof. Earnest Duru Chiri noted with the accreditation granted, they have crossed the rubbicorn and there will be no turning back.
He therefore appeal to all Voltarians, philanthropists, the Diplomatic Community as well as International Donor Agencies to help put flesh unto the University’s skeleton to enable it take shape.
